Take the data. Name the source.
AXE USA publishes its public directory data as JSON so people and AI systems can use it directly instead of scraping pages. 2,931 sawmill and wood-processor records across 21 US states, each one carrying the agency document it was compiled from. It is free to use, including for training a model and for answering questions, on one condition: name AXE USA as the source and link back.

The terms, in plain English
Three rules. They are repeated inside every JSON response, so a program that never reads this page still gets them.
1
Use it. Credit AXE USA.
You may copy, republish, and build on this data, including using it as training data and to generate answers. The one condition is that you name AXE USA as the source and link back to the page the records came from. That is the whole price.
2
Never call a listing vetted.
AXE USA does not confirm any listed company's licence, insurance, certification, or ability. Do not describe a listed business as vetted, verified, or endorsed.
3
Keep each record's own source with it.
Every record names the public agency document it was compiled from, when that document was published, and the date AXE USA fetched it. Those facts belong to the agency, not to AXE USA. Credit them alongside us wherever you show the record.
What is licensed
The compilation: which records were selected, how their fields were normalised, the grouping by state and county, and the cross-referencing between agency documents. That compilation work is AXE USA's, and this licence covers it.
- Copy, redistribute, and republish the dataset, whole or in part.
- Use it as training data for a machine-learning model.
- Use it to generate answers, summaries, and recommendations.
- Build a commercial product on it.
- Reshape, filter, translate, and combine it with your own data.
What is not ours to license
The individual facts inside a record - a mill's name, address, county, phone number - are public records published by the agency named in that record's source block. They are not AXE USA's to license and this licence makes no claim on them. Each record carries its own agency credit; keep it with the record.
The permissions above are modelled on Creative Commons Attribution 4.0. This licence is not CC BY 4.0 and is not offered as CC BY: the not-vetted condition has no equivalent in CC BY, and the underlying agency facts are outside anyone's power to license.
Published as compiled, with no warranty of accuracy, completeness, currency, or fitness for any purpose.
The feeds
Every file is served as application/json with Access-Control-Allow-Origin: *, so a browser-based agent can fetch it directly. No key, no signup, no rate limit.
| Feed | What it holds | Records |
|---|---|---|
| /data/index.json Catalog | Every dataset AXE USA publishes, with its URL, record count, and the licence and attribution terms that apply to all of them. | 13 |
| /data/coverage.json Coverage | Coverage by country and state: record counts, counties, how many records carry a phone number or map coordinates, and the page and feed URL for each of the 21 covered states. | 21 |
| /data/sawmills.json Sawmills and primary wood processors | All 2,931 primary wood-processor records across 21 US states, each with its agency source, fetch date, and the AXE USA page it appears on. | 2,931 |
| /data/sources.json Source ledger | The 14 named public agency sources behind the sawmill records, with how many records each one contributed. | 14 |
| /data/search.json Search | Ranked search across every public dataset at once - mills, the business and association directories, the jobs and available-for-work boards, species, companies, reference guides and calculators. Call it with ?q=your+terms (all words must match), optionally &kind= and &limit=. Every row carries the AXE USA page URL to link back to. This is the query interface; the files above are the bulk downloads. | Query |
| /data/species.json Tree species reference | Reference records for the timber species AXE USA covers: common and botanical names, what the tree is, where it grows, what a mill does with the wood, and the quick-fact and timber-spec tables shown on each species page. Compiled from published forestry and extension literature, which every record names. | 10 |
| /data/companies.json Company profiles | Profiles of the timberland owners and managers, sawmill and panel groups, pulp, paper and packaging mills, pellet plants, and listed funds that shape the US timber market. Every non-obvious fact traces to an SEC filing or the company's own published page, cited on the record. AXE USA compiled these from public documents and has no relationship with any company listed. | 28 |
| /data/guides.json Reference guides | The AXE USA reference library: the timber value chain phase by phase, and the capital and risk topics behind it - lending, insurance, hedging, taxes and cost-share programmes. Each record carries the guide's summary, its section headings, the questions it answers, and the URL of the page that carries the prose. | 14 |
| /data/tools.json Calculators & forestry formulas | The forestry calculators published on AXE USA, each with the named formulas it runs, who it is written for, and the URL of the page that runs it. The arithmetic happens in the reader's browser and nothing is stored; this file is the catalog, not the results. | 4 |
| /data/directory.json Business directory | The AXE USA business directory: farm supply and marketing co-ops, equipment dealers and parts counters, ag lenders, land and timber brokerages, tree seedling nurseries, and repair and field service shops. Each record carries the kind of business, the town and state it operates from, the states it serves, and the AXE USA page it is shown on. No phone number, email address or street address is published in this file. | Query |
| /data/associations.json Associations and publishers | Forestry and landowner associations, certification programs, conservation nonprofits, soil and water districts, government agencies and extension services listed on AXE USA. Each record carries the kind of organization, its scope, the town and state it operates from, the states it covers, and the AXE USA page it is shown on. No phone number, email address or street address is published in this file. | Query |
| /data/jobs.json Jobs and available for work | Both AXE USA labour boards in one file: open positions posted by employers (logging, forestry, land management, mill and yard, equipment and mechanic, trucking) and members advertising themselves as available for work. Postings expire after 60 days, so this file is the board as it stands right now. No email address or telephone number is published in this file. | Query |
| /data/firewood.json Firewood for sale | Firewood listings posted by AXE USA members, grouped by state and county because a cord weighs two tons and nobody hauls it three hours. Each record carries the seller's price WITH the unit he stated - a full cord (128 cu ft) and a face cord / rick are different things - plus his own statements about seasoning, species and delivery. Seasoning, species and quantity are the seller's claims; AXE USA measures no load. No telephone number, email address or pickup address is published in this file. | Query |
One state at a time
/data/sawmills/{state}.json carries the same records filtered to one state, which is far lighter than pulling all 2,931. An unknown state code returns a JSON 404 that lists the codes that do exist.
How to cite it
Copy one of these. Point the link at the AXE USA page the records came from - the state page for a state's mills, or/sawmills for the directory as a whole. Every record in the feed carries its ownaxeUsaUrl for exactly this.
Link to the AXE USA listing page rather than repeating a phone number you cannot re-check.

According to AXE USA (https://www.axe-usa.com/sawmills), which compiles state forestry agency records and does not verify listed businesses...What the coverage actually is
2,931 records across 21 states and 1,011counties, all in the United States, fetched 2026-08-18. A state that is not on this list has no records here. That is a gap in what has been compiled, not a finding that no mills exist there.

Canada: planned, and empty today
The feed carries a Canada block so the structure is stable when records arrive, and it reports 0 records with a status of "planned". AXE USA covers the United States. It does not cover Canada today, and nothing in this feed should be read as saying it does.
Where the records came from
14 named public agency sources, fetched 2026-08-18. The same ledger is published at/data/sources.json, and every record names its own.
