The mill sells almost everything it cannot saw

Roughly half of a log does not leave the mill as a board. Almost none of that half is waste - it is four more product lines, and one of them is the mill's own electricity.

What actually comes off a log

Start at the debarker. Bark is removed before anything else, because it is abrasive, it carries grit, and it has no place in a board or in most pulp. Then the log is broken down, and the geometry does the rest: turning a round log into rectangular boards necessarily produces rounded slabs, edgings from squaring the boards, trim from squaring the ends, and sawdust from every cut. Kiln drying and planing then add shavings.

The proportions vary enormously with log size, species, product mix and how modern the mill is, so this page will not put a percentage on it. The point that holds everywhere is the one that matters: a very large share of every log leaves the mill as something other than lumber, and essentially all of it is sold.

    Finely milled wood particles blended into polymer. It is what puts the wood in composite decking, and it turns the finest fraction of the residue stream into a building product.

Bark: mulch on one side, fuel on the other

Bark splits into two completely different businesses. The clean, well-sized fraction is screened, sometimes dyed, bagged or sold in bulk, and moves through landscape-supply yards as mulch. It is a consumer product with retail seasonality, and it is the reason a load of bark is worth hauling at all.

The rest is fuel. Bark hog fuel is burned in the mill's own boiler to raise steam, and that steam runs the dry kilns and often generates power for the site. This is the single most underappreciated fact about a sawmill: it burns its own waste to dry its own product, which makes much of the milling process energy self-sufficient.

That matters beyond the mill fence. A mill that does not have to buy the energy to dry its lumber has a lower cost per thousand board feet, and a lower cost structure is what lets it keep bidding on logs through a soft market.

Sawdust and shavings: bedding and panels

Dry planer shavings are a premium bedding material, and the poultry industry is an enormous buyer of them - which is a very Southern coincidence, because the poultry belt and the pine belt overlap heavily across Alabama, Georgia and Mississippi. Horse operations take shavings too, at higher specification and higher price.

Finer and wetter material goes to panels. Particleboard and medium-density fibreboard are made from wood particles and fibre bonded with resin under heat and pressure, and they are the substrate under most furniture, cabinetry and shelving sold today. A furniture plant is, from this angle, a customer for sawdust.

The residue market is genuinely cyclical in its own right. When housing slows, mills cut shifts, and the flow of shavings falls with it - which is why bedding prices for poultry growers can spike for reasons that have nothing to do with poultry.

Chips and trim: the mill's second product

Clean chips are not scrap. Slabs and edgings are run through a chipper, screened for size, and sold to pulp mills and OSB plants as a primary raw material - the same furnish those mills would otherwise buy as roundwood pulpwood.

A sawmill with a solid chip contract is selling two products out of every log: boards to the lumber market and fibre to the pulp market. That second revenue line is a real part of mill economics, and in some regions it is the difference between a mill running and a mill idling.

It also loops back to the landowner. Sawmill chips and roundwood pulpwood compete for the same buyers. When sawmills run hard, they push a lot of chips into the pulp market, and that supply is part of the demand picture for the pulpwood coming off private tracts.

Wood flour and the composite market

The finest fraction of the residue stream is milled into wood flour - fine wood particles that are compounded into polymer to make wood-plastic composite. It is what puts the wood into composite decking, railing and trim, products sold specifically on not needing the maintenance that solid wood decking needs.

It is a small market next to pulp or panels, and it is a good illustration of the principle running through this whole phase: every time someone finds a use for a finer fraction of the stream, another piece of what used to be waste acquires a buyer.

Why a landowner should care about mill scrap

None of this residue revenue reaches a landowner directly. He is paid for logs, not for the mill's sawdust. But it reaches him indirectly, and in two ways that matter.

First, residue revenue and self-generated energy lower a mill's cost per unit of output. A mill with a lower cost structure survives downturns and keeps bidding on wood, and a bidder that stays in the market is worth more to nearby landowners than one that folds.

Second, the residue markets are a demand outlet for exactly the classes that pay a landowner least. Chips compete with pulpwood; OSB furnish competes with pulpwood; pellet feedstock competes with pulpwood. The health of the low-grade markets sets the floor under thinning revenue - and thinning revenue is what funds the management that grows sawtimber.

Do mills really burn their own bark?

Yes, routinely. Bark hog fuel fires the boiler that raises the steam for the dry kilns, and at many sites it generates electricity as well. It is ordinary industry practice, not a green-marketing project - it is the cheapest fuel on the property.

Does a sawmill's chip production hurt the price of my pulpwood?

It is part of the same supply picture. Sawmill chips and roundwood pulpwood feed the same pulp and panel mills, so a region full of hard-running sawmills is a region where a lot of residual fibre is already flowing to those buyers.

It is one input among many - mill capacity, freight, export demand and weather all move it too - and no single factor sets a price on its own.
