The sort is a judgement call made in seconds
There is nothing laboratory-like about grading at the landing. A tree is felled, dragged to the deck, and a man on a loader - or an operator running a processor head - reads each stem and makes a call. Diameter first, because diameter decides which mills can physically take the log. Then straightness, because sweep destroys recovery: a bent log yields short, narrow boards where a straight one of the same size yields long, wide ones.
Then defect. Rot, ring shake, seams, forks, large or loose knots, insect damage, fire scar and embedded metal all pull a stem down. Metal in particular is a hard stop - a fence staple grown over thirty years ago can bounce a log out of a sawmill and, if it reaches the saw, cost the mill a blade and an hour.
The stem is then bucked into lengths chosen to get the most value out of what is actually in it, and the sections are decked with their own class. Different trucks leave for different destinations. The veneer log and the pulpwood cut from the same tree can end up two hundred miles apart at buyers who have no relationship with each other.

Rung 1 of 4: Veneer logs and poles

- What it looks like
- The best stems on the tract: large diameter, dead straight, round in cross-section, clean of knots and free of sweep, rot, seams and metal. A pole log must hold that straightness over a long length; a veneer log must be uniform enough to peel or slice without breaking the sheet.
- What it becomes
- Hardwood veneer for furniture and cabinet faces, peeled softwood veneer for plywood, and treated utility and power poles.
- Who buys it
- Veneer mills and plywood plants; pole yards and treating plants selling into utilities, telecoms and municipalities.
For the landowner: A tract may hold only a handful of these, and a buyer who is not sorting for them will simply pay you sawtimber for a pole. If your stand has clean, straight, large stems, ask before the harvest whether veneer and poles are being sorted out - not after.
Rung 2 of 4: Sawtimber

- Large-diameter, reasonably straight logs, sound and big enough to break down into wide boards. Sweep, forks, large knots and rot pull a stem down out of this class fast.
- What it becomes
- Dimensional framing lumber, timbers, decking, and the boards that go into homebuilding.
- Who buys it
- Sawmills - from large integrated softwood producers down to independent hardwood mills.
For the landowner: This is the backbone of most Southern pine harvest revenue. It is also the class most exposed to housing demand, which is why a stand that is close to sawtimber size is often worth carrying through a soft market rather than cutting into one.
Rung 3 of 4: Chip-n-saw
Middle valueAlso called: CNS
- What it looks like
- Medium-diameter stems - too small to break down into large boards on a conventional headrig, too good to send to a pulp mill. Straightness still matters here.
- What it becomes
- Small dimensional boards from the core, and chips from everything the machine takes off the outside. The name is literally the process: the outer wood is chipped away and the square middle is sawn.
- Who buys it
- Chip-n-saw lines at Southern pine sawmills, with the chip stream sold on to pulp and panel mills.
For the landowner: This class is why the second thinning matters so much. Stems that are chip-n-saw today are sawtimber in a handful of growing seasons, and that is one of the clearest examples of the growth hedge on any tract.
Rung 4 of 4: Pulpwood
Lowest valueAlso called: Pulp, fibre, thinnings
- What it looks like
- Small, crooked, forked, suppressed or damaged stems, plus the tops of larger trees and everything removed in an early thinning. Form barely matters; it is going to be chipped.
- What it becomes
- Kraft pulp for paper and packaging, plus furnish for oriented strand board and other panel products.
- Who buys it
- Paper and containerboard mills, OSB and panel plants, and increasingly pellet plants.
For the landowner: Lowest value per ton, but do not read it as worthless. Pulpwood is what pays for a thinning, and a thinning is what concentrates the stand's growth onto the stems that will become sawtimber. It is the cheapest wood on the tract and it funds the most valuable.
Veneer logs and utility poles - the top of the sort
These are the best stems on the tract, and there are never many of them. A veneer log has to be large, round, straight and clean enough to be peeled on a lathe or sliced into sheets without the sheet breaking up. A pole log has to hold that straightness over a long length and meet a specification for taper and defect, because it is going to be set in the ground and hung with energised conductors.
The products are correspondingly high value: hardwood veneer for furniture and cabinet faces, peeled softwood veneer for plywood, and treated utility and power poles sold into electrical utilities, telecoms and municipalities.
The practical warning for a landowner is simple. A buyer who does not sort for veneer and poles will pay you sawtimber for them, and nothing about the transaction will look wrong. If your stand carries clean, straight, large-diameter stems, the time to ask whether veneer and poles are being sorted and where they are going is before the harvest, not after the last load.
Sawtimber - the backbone of the cheque
Sawtimber is large-diameter, reasonably straight, sound logs big enough to break down into wide boards. It becomes dimensional framing lumber, timbers, decking and the boards that go into houses, and for most Southern pine harvests it is the largest single line on the settlement.
It is also the class most directly exposed to housing. When starts are strong, sawmills run hard and compete for logs; when starts stall, the bid softens and the mills that were sorting aggressively stop. That is the cycle a landowner is actually reading when he watches the industry news.
Because sawtimber is where the value concentrates, the growth question matters most at its threshold. A stand sitting just under sawtimber size in a soft market is usually a stand worth carrying, because time moves it in the right direction on both counts: more volume, and a larger share of that volume in the higher class.
Chip-n-saw - the class in between
Chip-n-saw is medium-diameter material: too small for a conventional headrig to break into large boards, too good to sell as pulp. The name is the machine and the process. The log is fed through heads that chip away the rounded outer wood - those chips going straight to a pulp or panel mill - leaving a square cant in the middle that is sawn into small dimensional boards.
It exists because it recovers two products from a log that would otherwise be sold as one. That is why chip-n-saw pays meaningfully more than pulpwood without being sawtimber, and why Southern pine mills built whole lines around it.
For a landowner, this class is the clearest illustration of what a thinning is for. Stems that are chip-n-saw today become sawtimber with a few more growing seasons and the room to use them. Take the competition out around them and they get there faster.
Pulpwood - lowest value, and the one that pays for the rest
Pulpwood is everything small, crooked, forked, suppressed or damaged, plus the tops of larger trees and the bulk of what comes out in an early thinning. Form is close to irrelevant because it is all going to be chipped. It becomes kraft pulp for paper and packaging, furnish for oriented strand board and other panels, and increasingly feedstock for pellet plants.
It carries the lowest value per ton on the deck, and it is routinely dismissed by owners for that reason. That is a mistake. Pulpwood is what makes a thinning pay for itself, and a thinning is the single most reliable way to move the remaining stand up the value ladder. It is the cheapest wood on the tract, and it funds the production of the most expensive.
It is also the class that keeps a market at all in some counties. A tract too far from a sawmill may still be within haul of a paper mill or a pellet plant, and where pulp demand is present the whole harvest economics change.
What this does to your harvest contract
Once the four classes are clear, a harvest contract reads differently. The first question is whether you are being paid by product class or at one blended price for everything that leaves the gate. A blended price is not automatically bad, but it means the upside from a well-sorted tract goes to whoever did the sorting.
The second is scale. Who weighs or scales the load, where, and do you receive the tickets? Payment on delivered tons at a mill scale, with tickets back to you, is a very different arrangement from payment on someone's estimate.
The third is the structure. A lump-sum sale hands you a fixed price and hands the buyer the volume and price risk; pay-as-cut pays you per ton as wood moves, which puts more of both risks on you and more of the upside too. Neither is universally correct. They are different bets, and you should know which one you have made.
The fourth is what happens to the material nobody has talked about - tops, limbs, cull stems and any hardwood in a pine stand. Merchandised, or left on the ground? That answer is worth money and is very often not in the conversation.

- And where each one is going. A buyer who only has one outlet will merchandise to that outlet.
- Ask how you are paid
- Per class or blended, lump sum or pay-as-cut, and who holds the price risk in each case.
- Ask for the tickets
- Scale tickets are the audit trail for everything that left your land.
- Get more than one bid
- Mills within hauling distance are competing for wood, and the only way to find out what your sort is really worth is to make them answer at the same time.

Straight answers
Questions on this phase
- Can one tree really contain all four grades?
Frequently, yes. A large, well-formed pine can yield a veneer or pole butt log, sawtimber above it, chip-n-saw above that, and pulpwood out of the top - all from one stem, sold to four different buyers.
That is why bucking decisions at the landing matter so much: where the saw cuts the stem into sections determines how much of the tree lands in each class.
- Why does an inch of diameter change the price so much?
Because diameter is what decides which mill can process the log, and each mill class pays what its own products are worth. A stem an inch under a sawmill's minimum is not slightly less valuable to that mill - it is unusable, and it gets paid at the next class down.
The same is true of straightness. Recovery falls away sharply with sweep, so a bent log is worth what the boards that can actually be cut from it are worth.
- Does the lumber futures price tell me what my standing timber is worth?
The CME lumber contract (LBR) tracks finished framing lumber delivered to a mill - sawn, dried, graded, bundled and hauled. It is not standing timber, and it is not what a landowner is paid at the stump.
Between that futures print and your cheque sit harvesting, hauling, milling, drying, grading and the buyer's margin. Read the contract as the industry's temperature, never as your quote.
