Scale one log three ways

Measure the small end inside the bark, average of the short and long axis, and take the length to the nearest foot. The same two numbers run through all three board-foot rules at once.

Average the short and long axis. Sawlog rules start at 5 in.

Nominal length, before trim allowance. Tree-length stems are scaled in segments, not whole.

International 1/4-inch
BF = sum over 4-ft segments of (0.199 d² - 0.642 d)
The benchmark. Derived from log geometry with a 1/4-inch saw kerf assumed, and summed segment by segment with 1/2 inch of taper allowed per segment - which is why it reproduces the published table at any log length.

Measuring the log

  1. Small end, inside bark

    Every board-foot rule is scaled on the diameter of the small end, measured inside the bark. Bark is not lumber, and the small end is what limits what can be sawn out of the whole stick.

  2. Average an out-of-round end

    Measure the shortest diameter and the longest, and take the mean. Scalers do it as a matter of course; an oval log measured on its wide axis scales high every time.

  3. Length, and the trim allowance

    Logs are cut to nominal lengths with a few inches of trim on top. Scale the nominal length - a 16-foot log with 4 inches of trim scales as 16 feet, not 16 and a third.

  4. One log at a time

    Board-foot rules are per log, not per tree-length stem. A 40-foot stem is scaled as the logs it will be bucked into, because that is how it will be sawn.

Figures are the rules' own arithmetic, rounded to whole board feet. A scale difference is not money owed either way - a buyer prices against the rule he scales on, and the two are negotiated together.

Why three rules give three answers

A board foot is a unit of sawn lumber: a piece one foot by one foot by one inch. A log rule is somebody's estimate of how many of those a round log will yield once the slabs, the sawdust and the taper have been taken out of it. Estimate is the operative word - each of the three was built on a different idea of how a log gets broken down, and each is wrong in its own direction.

Doyle subtracts four inches from the diameter before squaring, as a flat allowance for slab and kerf. On a 24-inch butt log that allowance is a small share of the diameter. On a 10-inch top it is nearly half of it, and the rule squares what is left. That one design choice - a fixed deduction applied to logs of every size - is the entire reason Doyle and International part company on small wood. It is arithmetic written into the rule in the 1800s, and it does the same thing to every log, on every tract, for every buyer and every seller alike.

Scribner began as diagrams: boards drawn inside circles, counted, tabulated. It is properly a table rather than an equation, and the formula on this page is the version used to reproduce it. Because it started as drawings, it steps between sizes rather than curving smoothly, and the widely used decimal-C variant rounds to the nearest ten board feet on top of that.

International 1/4-inch was worked out from the geometry of a tapering log with a stated quarter-inch saw kerf. It is the closest of the three to what a mill actually recovers, which is why this page uses it as the benchmark the other two are measured against - not because it is the rule you will be paid on.

The only rule that matters is the one in your contract

A buyer quoting a price per thousand board feet Doyle knows exactly how Doyle scales, and prices accordingly - which is why Doyle rates per thousand sit above International rates for the same wood in the same week. The rule and the rate are set together, and neither one means much without the other.

The mistake worth guarding against is not the rule. It is comparing across rules without noticing. A price per thousand on Doyle and a price per thousand on International are prices for two different quantities of wood. Set the two rates side by side and the Doyle rate will look higher for exactly the same timber, because each thousand board feet Doyle is more wood than each thousand board feet International.

So: know which rule your contract specifies before you sign it, and never compare a rate quoted on one scale with a rate quoted on another without converting the volume first. That is the whole lesson of this page, and the calculator above exists to make it concrete with your own log.

Ask the question early
'Which log rule is this scaled on?' is a normal question, asked and answered in one word every day of the week. Ask it at the first conversation, not after the trucks roll.
Get it in writing
The scale rule belongs in the contract alongside the price, the products and the terms. If it is not written down, it is not agreed - and that protects both sides equally.
Ask to see the scale tickets
Mill tickets record the scale, the rule and the load. Asking for copies is routine practice, and having them is how a seller reconciles his own tally with what arrived.
Weight is a different world again
Much Southern pulpwood and a good deal of sawtimber trades by the ton at the mill scale, not in board feet at all. Tons and board feet do not convert reliably - moisture and species see to that - so establish which unit the sale is in before anything else.

This is shared professional ground, not a warning

A buyer scaling accurately on Doyle is doing nothing wrong. Doyle is the customary scale across the South, written into contracts, printed on scale sticks and built into the price structure of every mill that uses it. Scaling a log on the rule the contract names is exactly what a buyer is supposed to do, and doing it well is a skill.

What a consulting forester tells a client is not 'watch out for the buyer'. It is: know your rule, know your units, and don't compare across scales. The rule, the unit and the point of measurement are the three things a seller should be able to state about his own sale without looking them up - and a seller who can state them is easier to do business with, not harder.

Almost every dispute over scale that reaches a phone call started as a surprise rather than as arithmetic. Somebody expected board feet and got tons, or expected International volume against a Doyle rate, or did not know the scale happened at the mill rather than at the landing. An informed seller and an honest buyer want precisely the same conversation, and they want it before the timber moves.

Which rule?
Doyle, Scribner, International - or none of them, because the sale is by the ton. One word, and it belongs in the contract.
Where is it scaled, and by whom?
At the landing, at the mill gate, on a state scaler's ticket? Knowing the point of measurement is worth more than second-guessing the number that comes off it.
Ton or board foot?
The single most common mismatch in Southern timber conversations, and the easiest to settle: ask which unit the price is quoted in before you compare two offers.
Cubic is the neutral measure
Smalian's formula measures wood rather than lumber recovery, which is why pulp, chip and export trade runs on it. It is the next calculator along.

Why this page shows volume and never dollars

This calculator compares volume with volume and stops there. It will not tell you that a Doyle scale 'cost' you a figure in dollars, because such a figure would be arithmetically wrong, not merely impolite.

Here is why. Prices per thousand board feet Doyle run higher than prices per thousand board feet International precisely because Doyle counts fewer board feet in the same log. The scale and the rate move together. Take the board-foot difference between the two rules, multiply it by a rate quoted on one of them, and you have multiplied a quantity in one unit by a price in another - the number that falls out describes nothing that exists. It is the same error as pricing a tract in tons using a per-thousand-board-foot rate.

The useful comparison is the one shown above: the same log, the same day, expressed in three different units of measure. What that volume is worth is set by the mills within hauling distance of your gate in the week you sell, on the rule your contract names - and the way to find it is to have several buyers answer at the same time.

Why this calculator refuses very small logs

All three formulas fall apart at the bottom of the diameter range. Doyle reaches exactly zero at a 4-inch top, because that is what subtracting four inches does. The Scribner and International polynomials cross zero a little below that and then go negative.

Rather than print a negative board-foot count with a straight face, this calculator declines anything under a 5-inch small end and says why. Wood with a top that small is pulpwood, and pulpwood is bought by weight or by the cord - it is not scaled for lumber at all.

Which rule will an Alabama mill scale my logs on?

Doyle is the standard scale across the Southern US for both pine and hardwood sawlogs, so it is what you are most likely to meet - but 'most likely' is not 'certainly', and a good deal of Southern wood is bought by the ton and never scaled in board feet at all.

Ask the buyer. It is one question and it takes one word to answer, and the answer belongs in your contract.

My logs scale about 30% under International on Doyle. What does that actually mean?

It means your logs are small enough for Doyle's fixed four-inch deduction to matter, and nothing more than that. The gap is a published, centuries-old property of the rule, taught in every extension bulletin on scaling, and it is the same gap for everyone using the same rule on the same log.

It does not mean a dollar figure is missing from your cheque. Rates per thousand board feet Doyle are quoted higher than rates per thousand International for exactly this reason - fewer board feet counted, more dollars per thousand of them. The two move together, which is why this page compares volume with volume and leaves value out of it entirely.

The practical follow-up is a question, not a suspicion: which rule is this scaled on, where is it scaled, and may I have copies of the scale tickets? Those three answers settle almost everything.

Why won't the calculator show me the difference in dollars?

Because the figure would be arithmetic nonsense. A price per thousand board feet Doyle and a price per thousand board feet International are prices for two different quantities of wood; multiplying a board-foot gap by a rate quoted on the other scale produces a number that corresponds to nothing.

The comparison that is honest - and the one this page runs - is volume to volume. What that volume is worth depends on the rule your contract names, the products in your stand, and the mills in hauling distance of your gate this week.

Why is there no price on this page?

Because there is no such thing as a national timber price, and a stale number is worse than no number. Logs are expensive to haul, so what your wood is worth is set by the mills within hauling distance of your gate, in the week you are selling.

AXE USA prints no stumpage price anywhere on the site. What it does instead is help you make every buyer in range answer at once, which is the only way anybody has ever found out what a tract is really worth.

Can I scale a whole load with this?

A load is scaled log by log and totalled - there is no shortcut that respects the rules, because each formula is non-linear in diameter. Run each log and add them up.
